What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are permanently dilated veins through which blood circulates with difficulty or not at all. Veins carry blood against gravity. Veins rely on leg muscle contractions and one way valves inside, to carry blood back to the heart. If the valves are not working properly an enlargement of the veins occurs. The larger veins are called "varicose veins" whille the smaller are called "spider veins".

What causes Varicose Veins?

Heredity is responsible for 90% of varicose/spider vein cases. Hormonal factors can aggravate the problem, affecting woman more often than men. This leads to veins becoming more prominent during pregnancy. Standing for lengthy periods of time can also become a factor.

Sypmtoms

Faulty veins could cause symptoms that include leg aching, pain, ,heaviness, fatigue, ankle swelling, muscle cramping and restlessness, itching and burning. The symptoms often worsen with prolonged standing. Variicose veins can also lead to complications such as blood clots, bleeding and ulceration.

Phlebology

Is a vein treatment that causes abnormal veins to disappear and symptoms to improve. It prevents more extensive vein disease from developing and also helps to keep serious complications from occuring.

When to treat?

The sooner the better. Veins that cause leg pain, swelling, recurrent superficial blood clots, bleeding or ulceration are prime candidates for treatment. Veins that cause other symptoms such as aching, heaviness, fatigue or that are cosmetically unappealing will also benefit from treatment.

Treatment

Dr. Conrad Goulet offers two treatment methods for varicose & spider veins for patients in his two Victoria offices. The first is a conservative and preventative measure using compression stockings. The second is a corrective measure called sclerotherapy.

Compression

Elastic stockings can be worn to compress the lower extremities, thus stopping the swelling of the legs and formation of new varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy | Sclerosing Injection Therapy

The sclerosing agent injected in varicose veins destroys the incompetent vein in one to three months. Blood circulation is restored through normal veins.
a) Varicose veins are treated from the thighs downward. Large veins are injected before small varicosities.
b) Pain tends to disappear and cosmetic appearance of the legs improvesafter after only 3 to 4 sessions.

After treatment recommendations and varicose vein prevention

Stay active, walking, sports and other physical excericise.
Wear elastic stockings that you put on before getting out of bed, particularily for work. Elastic stockings are preferably not worn during the Summer because of the heat.
Watch your weight
If your job requires long periods of standing, lift your heels frequently and move your toes inside your shoe to activate circulation.
When working in a standing position, wear shoes with 1"-2" heels. High heels impair venous pump of the feet.
Avoid sunburn during and for a few months after treatment by using total protection sunscreen lotion.
